How to Translate Japanese Images to English
A practical workflow for translating Japanese screenshots, posters, manga, menus, and product images into English.

Japanese text appears in many different visual forms: vertical poster headlines, compact app labels, manga dialogue, restaurant menus, and product callouts. A reliable workflow needs to recognize the text, translate its meaning, and keep the English connected to the right part of the image.
Start with the clearest source
Use the original screenshot or image whenever possible. Small kana, closely spaced kanji, furigana, and decorative headlines are harder to recognize after repeated compression. If the text occupies only a small area, crop unnecessary surroundings before translating.
Select Japanese rather than relying on detection

Match the mode to the image

Protect names and specialist terms
Add instructions for names, product codes, game terminology, or titles that should remain unchanged. Japanese text can omit subjects or rely on context, so check short labels and ambiguous phrases against the surrounding image.
Review layout as well as language
English often takes more horizontal space than Japanese. Inspect headings near the edge, text in narrow bubbles, vertical copy, and words placed over detailed artwork. The best result is not simply a correct translation; it is a readable translation that still belongs in the composition.
A quick publishing checklist
- Confirm names, numbers, dates, and prices.
- Check reading order across manga panels or multi-column layouts.
- Compare small labels at full resolution.
- Keep the original file for side-by-side review.
- Ask a native reviewer to check content used commercially or publicly.
